This original abstract sculpture was inspired by the cube shape of the granite block and the title of a song that I like.

I purchased a large block of this particular granite years ago and have been breaking it down to use for various sculptures over the years. It is quarried in Australia and has the unique characteristic of thousands of tiny red garnets imbedded in the black and white striated background colours. These garnets are not gem quality, however they do add an interesting visual aspect to the stone.

I envisioned a spherical form within a spherical form, like a seed emerging from its shell and I’ve discerned the two by using different surface textures. The outside surfaces of the sculpture are smooth, yet matte finished. This allows the viewer to see the colours of the granite and appreciate the flowing contours when they caress the sculpture. The smaller sphere, or seed has a rough surface as well as the fissure from which it emerges. Although the surface here is slightly rough, the overall curves are consistent to successfully describe the forms. Shadows cast by these surfaces are more pronounced as well. One can still discern the colours of the material, but they are softened in contrast to the smooth outer surfaces.

This sculpture can be exhibited outside as well as inside.
