I was inspired by my small sculpture, “The Rabbit”, which I carved from Carrara cipollino marble to carve a larger version. I had a large block of sunlight marble, from the south central region of British Columbia, Canada in my studio that I bought decades ago. This elliptical shaped chunk of stone was something I purchased on a whim, thinking “one day, I’ll think of something for this”. Well, here is the result.
The smaller rabbit sculpture is slightly more abstract on form. This larger version has a more prominent tail and ears, though the smooth round body and stylized head are similar. This shows how a sculptural form that can work well at one scale, does not necessarily look great at another scale. I wanted to create a large, heavy form that was simple in composition, yet spoke “rabbit” upon closer inspection by the viewer.
Sunlight marble is characterized by a warm, creamy white background colour that has striations of green and brown and one can see all these in this sculpture. This marble was very popular in residential housing design in its raw state for fireplace facings in the 1980s and 90s, but fell out of fashion. Hence, it is difficult for me to acquire more of this stone now.
