This abstract female torso sculpture is carved from absolute black granite from India. I have polished the surfaces to a high gloss, which accentuates the midnight black colour of this beautiful stone and allows for a wonderfully smooth, reflective quality to the sculpture. I have mounted the piece on a matching black granite circular base, secured by a hidden stainless steel pin.
Although abstract in nature, the composition reveals the elements of a female figure – long, slender thighs, flaring hips, narrow waist, and shoulders. I have imbued a sense of contrapposto pose in the shift of the figure’s hips and opposing tilt of the shoulders. I’ve also abstracted upper body to emulate a breast and upraised arm.
There is a pleasant contrast between sharp angles and soft curves in the composition. And there is a contrast between the solid form of the stone against the crisp silhouettes those forms create against a pale background. This sculpture will look best against a pale coloured wall, or the empty space of the sky. Granite can live indoors or outdoors equally well.
