This abstract sculpture is carved from a variety of black marble called nero marquina, which is quarried in the Basque region of Spain. This striking marble has striations of white that run haphazardly through the midnight black background. I have mounted the sculpture on a circular base of highly polished black granite. The surface of the sculpture is smooth, but has a matte finish to accentuate the stone’s ability to hold shadow. The shadows are barely discernable, due to the black marble colour, but when lit right, one can enjoy the subtle details the shadows reveal.
Necromancer means a sorcerer who conjures up dead spirits for the purpose of divination in this world. I chose this title, due to the black colour of the stone, the white striations emulating swirling spirits and the negative hole that could represent those no longer with us that can appear here in this world. Notice the shape of the negative space is the upside down profile of the entire sculpture. There is a ridge on one side that arcs from the upper right, cradles the negative space and ends at the bottom right – yet there is no matching arc on the other side. The top of the sculpture is an asymmetrical curve. The sides are almost symmetrical, but there is a subtle reverse curve that drops from the high side of the top.
The sculpture is permanently secured to the base by a hidden stainless steel pin.
