This abstract sculpture has been carved from a variety of stone quarried in Turkey and is called laguna rosso marble, after it’s deep burgundy red colour. When one looks closely, tiny white calcite crystals are evident in the red background and occasionally there is a stripe of white, as runs through the middle of this sculpture. It is mounted on a polished black granite base and secured by a metal pin and sleeve system so the sculpture can be easily turned to any attitude. The sculpture itself has a smooth matte finish, so the marble can successfully hold shadows.

Binkley carved this abstract as essentially two matching forms that appear, wrap around each other and collapse into each other. The side profile reveals a boat-like bottom from which the two wave forms rise up. When one turns the sculpture to a certain angle, the form’s profiles describe a valentine heart. There are wide convex and concave surfaces that are revealed between sharp, shadow casting edges and the whole composition is designed to carry the viewer’s eye and hand all around the artwork.

Although the stone sculpture is very heavy, it appears almost weightless balanced on the single mounting pin.
