This abstract sculpture is the first piece I carved at my new studio in the East Village of Vancouver. I moved my practice from Squamish, BC back to Vancouver in the fall of 2025.
Although abstract in form, the sculpture does have a composition that reminds one of a female torso. The piece is balanced on a small surface, secured with a hidden stainless steel pin and the form flares upward, then reduces before opening up again to the top. The result is like the thighs, waist and shoulders of a female figure and the upper portion is reminiscent of the bodice of a dress.
The sculpture is carved from a variety of marble from the Petacchi quarries of Carrara, Italy. I was very pleased to see a band of solid white appear that encircles the lower portion of the piece and accentuates the sense of a woman’s thighs and waist as it follows upwards each side and across the midsection. It is mounted on a circular black base of granite from India. The sculpture can freely turn to any attitude and when downlit, as in theses photos, creates wonderful shadow patterns.
