Although this is a pure abstract form with undulating surfaces and edges, I feel the image is reminiscent of a figurative torso. It could be viewed as male, with broad shoulders, or female, with slim waist and curvy hips. That’s the beauty of abstract art!
I’ve carved it from petacchi marble, a variety of white marble from the famous mountains above Carrara, Italy, and left the surface of the sculpture a smooth matte finish, so the marble can hold shadows successfully. This is important for the viewer’s eye to appreciate the form and entice one to touch this sculpture and is in contrast to the highly polished base.
Usually, I contrast the subject with a different coloured base, but I am pleased with the monochromatic look of this piece.
