I have returned to the classic image of the female torso many times in my creative process, and this is another rendition celebrating this subject. I love the ancient Greek amphora jar shape and how it echoes the thighs and hips of a female figure. I’ve used this once again here and the heavy sculpture appears almost weightless balanced on the circular black granite base, secured by a hidden steel pin. The composition flares upwards before reducing to form the figure’s waist. Then the form flares again to the top of the sculpture, in a swirl of curvilinear edges that emulate the figure’s breasts and shoulders. These edges encourage the viewer’s eye and hands to move around the sculpture, enjoying all angles of the composition. I’ve imbued a sense of a female figure whose spine is stretching backwards, creating a lovely line from the small of the back, down over the buttocks to the thighs.

I have carved this sculpture from a variety of granite, called garden ice, that is quarried in Australia. There are thousands of red garnets that appear in the black and white background of the stone, giving an element of interest when one looks closely at the stone. I’ve finished the artwork with a smooth, matte surface that is wonderful to the touch, yet allows the granite to successfully hold shadows. The sculpture can turn on its pin to any attitude, allowing one to easily enjoy all viewing angles.
