This original abstract stone sculpture is carved from a beautiful variety of marble that was quarried on the mountains of the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Binkley selected the raw block himself and as it is not commercially quarried, he and his colleagues have christened the stone as rainforest marble, after the temperate rainforest below the quarry site.
Rainforest marble is characterized by the multi-hued striations that run through the predominantly grey background. Because of the busy stone pattern, Binkley was inspired to create a very simple vertical composition that has an elliptical from. Since the viewer’s eye identifies immediately to the colourful stone, Michael feels a composition of minimalist edges and surfaces is best. He has created a negative space that is accentuated by a semicircular “hood”. The abstract gives the impression of a hooded figure.
The sculpture has a smooth, matte finish that is wonderful to the touch, celebrates the colours of the marble, yet absorbs light, so the dramatic shadows can be successfully held. The sculpture is attached to the highly polished black granite circular base with a hidden steel pin.
