I am often asked “What inspires you to create a sculpture?”. My response is that my sensors are never “off” and there is no telling what may trigger a shape in my mind. However, this sculpture was definitely inspired by a moment in the summer of 2025. Michelle and I visited the Blue Lagoon on Camino Island, Malta and at the end of a hot, sunny afternoon, a dark storm cloud approached. As the black cloud was moving to block the sun, the leading edge became a sharp brilliantly lit sliver.
The memory stuck in my head and when back at my studio, I knew what I would create from a long, thin off-cut of cipollino marble that I had been saving. This serpentine, undulating abstract form is my stone interpretation of that Maltese storm cloud edge. I have mounted it to appear to be hovering over a black granite base on a stainless steel pin, and gives the material an air of weightlessness. The sculpture can be turned on the base or removed for transport.
The creamy white background colour of the marble contrasts against the grey green striations, adding to the illusion of a storm cloud’s brightly lit edge.
