I carved this sculpture in 2010, and my parents enjoyed it in their home until 2023, whereupon it they gave it back to me. This was part of a trio of abstract forms that I carved and titled “biomorphic”. One found a home immediately at my annual Studio Show in 2010, however this one and a third did not.
After all these years, I decided to refine this sculpture just a little more. It’s first iteration was more triangular when viewed from above, so I reworked the marble to make it more elliptical. I am pleased with it now, as the profile better echoes the swirling centre.
I’ve titled it “Vortex”, as the bulbous shapes on the perimeter spiral inwards and appear to vanish into a tiny black hole in the sculpture’s centre. The outer surfaces of the sculpture are a silky smooth matte finish to allow the stone to successfully hold shadows. When the stone is lit, one can clearly see the marble crystals reflecting light like sunlight on powder snow. As the forms begin to spiral tighter towards the centre, their surface texture changes to a fine file finish, adding tiny shadow patterns to the sculpture surface. The viewer’s attention is drawn inward and downward into the tiny, dark shadowed hole in the middle.
