Binkley at the Winnipeg Parade of Homes

I was contacted via email by a design/builder of residential homes and they were looking for some sculpture to decorate their entry into the 2012 Parade of Homes in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The Parade of Homes is produced by the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association, and ran from Sept. 15 to Oct. 6, 2012.

The owners of Mannington Homes, Trevor and Kathy Markevich have created an 8,000 square foot contemporary home as their 2012 entry. There were three wall niches that were crying out for a sculpture each. Kathy had found my website and two of my sculptures were perfect for the tall, narrow niches.

She chose “Blade” and “Jagged Flame”, both abstract sculptures that are carved from basalt from the Columbia River Basin between Washington and Oregon in USA.

The challenge was to find a piece for the third niche. I made several suggestions, and Kathy finally decided upon “Mrs. Peabody”. I had to make an alteration to the sculpture’s base and change it to a rectangular granite one that was narrow enough to fit the 8” deep niche. This sculpture is carved from a variety of marble from Carrara that is a light grey colour, called bardiglio.

The Markevich’s were pleased with the three sculptures, but needed them delivered within a week. I managed to call upon our trusted Pack & Ship to get the pieces from North Vancouver to Winnipeg on time. They were unveiled with the house and I even received an email that week from a visitor who had noticed my work and was interested in seeing more.
