Binkley Commission for Orca Sculpture

I received a commission to create another leaping orca sculpture to be executed from the lovely portoro macchia marble from La Spezia, Italy.

A film director contacted me, as he was interested in the orca sculpture that I recently sold but was still exhibited on my website. After confirming that the piece was indeed gone, we made arrangements for he and his wife to visit me to discuss my creating a similar piece for them, as they were both visiting Vancouver together.

During our meeting, the gentleman explained he had a vivid dream about swimming with whales and went online to see if he could find an artwork to fit his vision. My orca sculpture came up in his search and he emailed me. We agreed that I would execute a sculpture with a similar pose and in the same marble, but they understood it would not be exactly the same.

So I’m in the throws of creating a similar piece for them, and above is the roughed out marble block.
