Binkley Receives New Public Art Commission for 2018
I am pleased to announce that I have been awarded the commission to create two sculptures which will adorn the entrance to a new branch of Vancity Savings Credit Union in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Vancity wants to keep you in anticipation, so I cannot divulge exactly what I will be carving. But Michelle and I are giving you a hint in the photo above when we were in Changsha, Hunan, China in 2014. There will be two companion pieces, carved in locally sourced grey granite which will flank the front doors of the new branch.
I’m looking forward to beginning the work. I’ll be posting progress updates here on my blog, so stay tuned!
Diane Craven
Congratulations Michael. I’m so happy for you and proud of you too. City of Van made a great choice!
Michael Binkley
Thanks, Diane. It’s actually Vancity that awarded the contract, not the City of Van, but it will be a public art piece.
Audrey Lomnes
Congratulations Michael, looking forward to the updates!
Michael Binkley
Thank you, Audrey. The raw stone is cut and I’ll go and take a snap of them tomorrow.
Daniela Fliegner

Thank you, Gail. I’ll be posting a progress post soon, but can only share some peek-a-boo photos due to my NDA with Vancity until unveiling.

A Binkley public artwork in Vancouver has been long overdue. No one has worked harder than you to get this commission; do enjoy creating it as we will enjoy beholding it . . .
Michael Binkley
Thank you so much, George. Very kind words. This was an invited call, but we are happy to have been awarded the opportunity and I’m enjoying the creative process so far. My one and only open call win was the BC Children’s Hospital “Banana Slug” last year and I owe that win to a jury of children!
