Binkley Sculpture Carved from Fossil Rock
This is a quick close up picture of a sculpture in progress. It’s a commissioned memorial piece for a local patron.
I posted it to show the most intriguing fossil formations and shell fragments, evident throughout the sculpture. It’s a rock that comes from the province of Manitoba and has a gorgeous, rich colour to it. The red background and the golden yellow fossils contrast against each other. The stone wholesaler we buy it from calls it ‘henna limestone’ as it looks like the Indian Henna paint used to decorate the women’s hands during a time of celebration.
It’s an outdoor sculpture and because it carries the fossils, a natural texture is seen. This changes with the light conditions and the rain sprinkles creating an ever changing display of shadow, light and colour.
