Binkley Studio – End of an Era, Part One

After 32 years marketing my original fine art stone sculptures from our location in Moodyville, North Vancouver, Canada, I’m moving my gallery and sculpture garden. I will continue to operate my studio from the old location, but gallery has to move!

The formal gallery will be in limbo for several months, as my new location is currently being constructed. But the sculpture garden is now located at Michelle’s and my new home in Lynn Valley, North Vancouver, Canada.

It was a typically rainy Vancouver day for the move, but our crane operator Gord was unfazed and enjoyed the challenge, as safely moving my art work was far more interesting to him than moving another load of re-bar…

This is indeed the end of an era for Michelle and I, and a bittersweet period for us. While we are looking forward to the new studio and gallery location, we are taking some time to remember the great successes that came out of our old location. The annual Garden Sculpture Show, Michelle’s idea in 1995 that lead to the North Vancouver Community Arts Council’s annual Art in the Garden Tour, CBC’s “The Canadian Gardener” visit in 1996 are two of the highlights. Over the decades, we redesigned the old property gardens several times. The biggest change came in 1998, after we added the gallery addition. Michelle designed a fabulous landscape that included pathways and stairways that divided garden “rooms” in which we could exhibit and sell my large scale sculptures. Remembering the (literally) blood and sweat that we put into constructing that garden gives us pause.

Change is difficult and painful, but necessary if one is to evolve, especially as an artist.

We do have to develop the foliage around the art works, and our creative landscaping juices are flowing with ideas to develop our new sculpture garden. What do you think of the sculpture’s new placements?
