Binkley’s Vancity Savings Public Art Sculpture Nearing Completion

My latest pubic art sculpture commission is nearing completion and these are detail shots of some parts of the sculptures. I’m carving two artworks in grey granite that will grace the entryway to one of Vancity Savings Credit Union’s new branches in downtown Vancouver, BC, Canada.

I’ve been using diamond bladed angel grinders and pneumatic carbide chisels to work the granite and imbue the details of each sculpture. They will have varying textures on them, honed surfaces, bush hammered ones and shiny, highly polished surfaces. These textures will also vary the colour of the granite, from almost white to dark grey. These colour variances are important for the story each will depict.

Now each piece is ready to receive some detailed images that will be best achieved using a sandblasting technique. The sculptures need to be transported once again away from the studio for this process. When they return, they will just need a final cleaning in preparation for installation. This is scheduled for April 22, 2018, and I will finally be able to reveal them to you!
