Final Sculptures Shipped to Singapore Hotel
I can finally reveal the location of my recent public art project. For almost two years, I’ve had to keep it under wraps, but now that the final stage of sculptures have been shipped, I can tell you that 25 Binkley sculptures will be installed in various locations of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore.
These are the final 9 abstract sculptures that I completed recently. These identically shaped sculptures are 33″ high each and carved from a single block of calacatta vagli marble that was quarried in Carrara, Italy and I purchased from a stone dealer in Kansas, USA. Like the first 12 of these identically shaped sculptures that I carved and shipped last year (those were all carved from Italian cipollino marble), this design was inspired by a sculpture, “The Harp” that I created several years ago and is in a private collection in PA, USA. The composition of each is very thin, so light can penetrate through each sculpture when lit from behind. Each of these 21 sculptures will grace Executive Suites in the Hotel. The first 12 are located in the left and middle tower in the photo above. The 9 sculptures shown here will grace the right tower rooms.
Here are the completed 4 different, larger abstract sculptures I completed for one of the lobby areas. These were each inspired by previous sculptures I created in the past. Each of these sculptures is about 30″ tall.
Three of the original sculptures I have sold, so I was tasked to create new pieces based on the originals. On the left is a sculpture inspired by “Egg Shell” and carved from cipollino marble from the Carrara area of Italy. They required a very similar design, but the height had to be increased over the original. Next is a piece inspired by “Angel” and carved from nero marquina marble from Spain. This one is very similar in size to the original. Second from right was inspired by “Sand Dance”, as the original in the gallery isn’t tall enough and I couldn’t think of a way to stretch the marble to fit the project! The piece on the right is inspired by “Dante’s Prayer” (in a private collection in Sidney, BC, Canada) and carved from nero marquina marble. This version has more depth than its predecessor. These four sculptures will be mounted on plinths and set in niches along a passageway in one of the lobbies of the Hotel.
The Marina Bay Sands Hotel has been undergoing an extensive renovation and my contribution of 25 sculptures is but a small part of the project. I was contacted two years ago by Sweeney Co. Art Advisors to create the first 12 sculptures, and then they commissioned the 4 larger ones. As I was completing the second series, they asked for 9 more of the Harp design sculptures. Myself, Sweeney, an interior design company and the Hotel worked collaboratively on this extensive project.
I hoped that I will get some in situ photos of my sculptures, but Sweeney informed me that the four sculptures above are in the high stakes gambling area and due to security reasons, no photos are available. The 21 identical shaped pieces are in executive suite penthouse rooms, and again, no photos. However, I am very proud to have a series of my “children” gracing the halls of this exotic locale. Perhaps someday, Michelle and I will be able to visit them in person.
