Gallery and Studio

Fine Art in Squamish

Binkley Studio Ltd. offers a very unique fine art experience. While most commercial art galleries exhibit artwork only, we have a fully working stone sculpture studio right behind the gallery, and you will be hosted by the artist who creates the constantly changing collection of artworks.

While you visit the Gallery, Michael Binkley encourages you to not just look at his sculptures with your eyes but also to touch his works with your hands. He strives to create artworks that not only look good, but feel good. The sensory joy one experiences from feeling a polished or textured stone is something no other material can provide. Michael shares with you the story behind each sculpture; the inspiration for the artwork, the material it is carved from and the journey each piece made from a cold piece of mountain rock to a brilliant finished fine art sculpture.

And you are welcome to explore further into the art space by passing through the large barn door to the Studio. It is a rare opportunity to visit any artist’s creative space, but Michael is always happy to share. With his inclusive and engaging manner, he will show you the workings of a contemporary stone carving studio – and if you are up to the task, you can even try your hand at chiseling a block of stone yourself! It is akin to the wonderful glass blowing houses on the island of Murano in Venice, Italy.

Many still hold the yesteryear notion of the artist’s garret loft with hammer and chisels laying beside a silent block of white marble. Contemporary stone carving uses modern technologies of noisy electric tools, with diamond and carbide abrasives, and is muddy, dusty work. Each sculpture is the result of removing solid stone from an original block.
