Michael Binkley carved this original fine art abstract sculpture from a piece of nephrite jade that was quarried in northern British Columbia, Canada. This particular variety of the coveted green nephrite BC jade is know as “polar jade” and has added characteristics of teal blue and bright electric green flecks. The surfaces of the sculpture are polished to a high gloss, mirror-like finish to accentuate the beautiful colours of the jade. Binkley mounted the sculpture on a base of black granite.
Binkley took inspiration from ancient Greek amphora jars, as he feels these vessels have a feminine quality and resemble female torsos. This abstract sculpture has a similar hourglass shape that seems to describe a female’s hips and waist. The artist sculpted a curvilinear edge that rises up from the mid section, undulates around the top and created concave surfaces in between. This leads one’s imagination to the shoulders and clavicle bones of a female’s body. This is an example of a contained and “closed” composition, as all the edges and surfaces carry the eye around the sculpture and entice the viewer to want to touch it.
