“Look to the Horizon” at Changsha International Sculpture Festival

These are photos of Michelle and I celebrating the completion of “Look to the Horizon” at the carving site of the Changsha International Sculpture Festival 2014.

The sculpture is carved from a grey granite that is quarried near Xiemen, China. It has a tight grain and is charcoal grey when wet and light grey when dry. I have chosen to leave a bush hammered texture finish on the stone that makes the granite appear an even lighter grey when dry and accentuates the shadows when light falls on it.

These photos were taken on Tuesday, October 28, 2014 and the day was overcast. The natural light was flat, but one can still see most of the details of the sculpture. This shows how grey granite has the ability to create the illusion of its own light, even in situations of low lighting.

The executives of the main sponsor of the event have all visited the Park during the festival, have witnessed the crazy Canadian who carves all day in the sun and heat, and have complimented me on my work ethic and my composition. My goal was to complete my contract and to please them. I think I achieved that.

It is yet to be decided where this sculpture will be located in Yanghu Wetland Park, Changsha, China, but my hope is that it will be somewhere viewers can see it from a distance and not surrounded closely by trees. This Park is huge, so there are many possibilities for this to occur. However, I am resigned to the fact that I will have no control over this and trust the the organizers will do the right thing. It is now their artwork but I hope my impression on the sponsor will help motivate them to nicely situate “Look to the Horizon.”
