I’ve carved this animal sculpture of a humpback whale from nero marquina marble which is quarried in the Basque region of northeast Spain. The black colour of the marble is perfect for the subject and the white striations in the stone look like patterns of sunlight that filter through ocean waves on the animal’s back in the wild. I’ve mounted the whale sculpture on a glass base to emulate water and the special edges are designed to catch the light.
The sculpture can turn completely around on the stainless steel pin and can be removed for transport.
