The Owl and the Pussycat Sculpture Commission

I was commissioned by a long-time supporter to create a special sculpture that he wanted to give to his wife for her milestone birthday. Alleyne Cook has been our gardening mentor for decades and he and his wife, Barbara love my work. Alleyne wished to surprise her with my rendition of the Owl and the Pussycat.

“The Owl and the Pussycat” is a lovely children’s poem by Edward Leer. I chose to depict the part of the poem where the Owl serenades the beautiful Pussycat while he plays his small guitar as they float in their pea-green boat. The Pussycat’s tail flicks outside the boat and almost dangles in the water.

I have carved the sculpture from white marble from the Petacchi quarry above the famous town of Carrara, Italy. I left the figures of the animals with a fine file finish which allows the marble to successfully hold shadows. The hull of the boat is highly polished for contrast.

Barbara was thrilled when she was presented with the sculpture.

    Michael,
I and Paula still love to look at “Yen and Yang” every night before turning out the light to sleep. It is still as beautiful today as it was when you created it for us twenty years ago. It gives us a feeling of closeness that is almost spiritual. Thank you so much for your hands and spirit that only God can speak to us through. You have a very special gift! Thank you for sharing it with us!
