Remounting a Sculpture
One of my collectors approached me to make a different base for a sculpture she had purchased from me years ago.
In 1996, she and her husband bought “Ursula,” a white marble figurative sculpture, at that spring’s Sculpture in the Garden exhibition here at Binkley Sculpture Studios. I had mounted the two piece sculpture on a rustic granite shard and the footing was buried deep in the earth. The presentation was one of informality, existing among shrubs and flowers. She enjoyed having it in her own garden for many years.
But time changes things, her husband passed away and her house and garden became too much for her. She downsized her living quarters to a high rise condo, but did not want to part with “Ursula.”
I was flattered that my sculptures (she had other interior pieces) were among those possessions she wished to keep, but “Ursula” needed a new base in order to live inside.
So we two collaborated on a more formal base for the sculpture that I made from highly polished black granite. “Ursula” now stands before floor to ceiling living room windows with the sky and downtown Vancouver as a backdrop, and the low base puts her at eye level when one sits on the furniture.
My patron is very pleased with the sculpture’s new look and that she can continue to enjoy the piece in her new home.
