Singapore Hotel Commission Progressing
My commission to carve 16 sculptures for a prominent hotel in Singapore is progressing. I’ve completed the first 12 sculptures and above is all of them awaiting final packing and crating before making their journey across the Pacific Ocean.
These are three of the 12 identically shaped sculptures that were inspired by a sculpture I carved a few years ago, titled “The Harp”, which is in a private collection in PA, USA. You can see the varied patterning of the cipollino marble that all 12 are carved from. In fact, all the sculptures have been carved from a single block of the Italian marble and the block was sliced into 12 slabs. Since I had to permanently attach mounting rods to the bottom of each piece, I made a temporary pedestal from plywood, so I could photograph each finished sculpture for review by the patron.
I’m pleased to announce that they have all been approved. Now I can proceed to working on the next four sculptures. I’ve received another large block of cipollno marble from Italy and here it is after its delivery to my studio. I have since split it into pieces which I am using to carve two of the sculptures. Here is the progress I’ve made so far:
The sculpture on the left is inspired by “Egg Shell” and the sculpture on the right is inspired by “Sand Dance”, both of which were carved from cipollino marble. It is unfortunate that “Sand Dance” isn’t bigger, but I just cannot figure out how to stretch rock! So I’m making a new sculpture that will fit the patron’s needs…
