Visit the Royal Palace Gardens in Oslo, Norway
We walked from our B&B through a bit of Oslo, Norway and discovered the Princess Ingrid Alexandra’s Sculpture Park within the Royal Palace Gardens. It is designed specifically for children, by children. The project was started in 2016 and is funded by the Savings Bank Foundation DNB in honour of the accession to the Norwegian throne of Their Majesties King Harald and Queen Sonja. When completed in 2019, there will be twelve sculptures and eight are installed now.
Through a nationwide competition among grade 6 students, two winning drawing designs from each region have been selected and are then sculpted by professional artists.
On a placard, the drawings for the fox, the rabbit head, the rainbow and the boy with the bird puppet are featured for reference. The sculptures are beautiful renditions of the drawings.
It was wonderful to watch several children and their parents interacting with the sculptures while we were there. The scale is small enough that children can view the pieces at their level, and climb on and touch the art works easily. There is a variety of media – stone, metal, fiberglass and lucite.
It is a completely charming collection, and is sure to be even better with the addition of the next four pieces.
