Visit to the Vigeland Sculpture Park in Oslo, Norway

Many years ago, longtime supporters and collectors, the Stormorkens told me about a sculpture park in their native country that I simply had to visit. As a stone sculptor, they felt I really should know about Gustav Vigeland and his work. I researched him and knew they were right – if ever I got the chance, I would pay a visit to the Vigeland Sculpture Park  in Oslo, Norway.

On July 3, 2018 I realized my wish. Michelle and I took our dogs for an afternoon in the Park and we were blessed with a beautifully sunny day.

Although I’ve managed to photograph these granite sculptures without many people in the picture, it was well subscribed to that day. And as I mention in my video, I was struck by the fact that none of the other visitors to the Park were offended by, nor giggled at the nude art works.

This is a pet peeve of mine in Vancouver, BC, Canada, where politicians and bureaucrats wring their hands in fear of “offending” the public and refuse to allow the nude in public art. So sad, especially when one sees the beauty of art in the rest of the world.

Not only does the pubic look at the sculptures, but they touch the art works – especially the granite ones. This is evidenced by the slightly blackened areas of the stone. I am thrilled, as I encourage viewers to touch my work. I feel it is an integral part of sculpture, and especially of stone sculpture.
