I carved this sculpture in 2010, and my parents enjoyed it in their home until 2023, whereupon it they gave it back to me. This was part of a trio of abstract forms that I carved and titled “biomorphic”. One found a home immediately at my annual Studio Show in 2010, however this one and a third did not.
After all these years, I decided to rework the piece entirely from what used to be a pea seed that had sprouted tendrils that wrapped around the form. This abstract form has smooth matte surfaces that undulate and swirl with a top ridge that appears to be an ocean wave at one end and wrinkles towards the narrow end of the sculpture. The result make me think of a Chinese dumpling in soup, so that inspired the title.
This type of Carrara marble is prized for its clean white colour and most sculptors desire no striation patterns. However, I do, as I feel it lets the viewer know that the material is real stone and not a man-made product. There are a few striations in this piece that add to the movement of the artwork. And when a strong light source hits the sculpture, one can see light reflecting off the surface crystals like sunlight on fresh powder snow.
Although the sculpture is heavy in weight, the surfaces and shadows give it a feeling of lightheartedness.
