Sculpture “Lift” Finds a Home in West Vancouver, Canada

michael binkley abstract marble sculpture

I found a home for my sculpture, “Lift.”

While I was showing my work at the NVCAC’s Art in the Garden Tour in May 2013, I met landscape designer Nancy Chen, of Melodii Gardens. She was impressed with my sculptures and said she would think of me if ever she had an interested client.

Well, last week she had one such client. Nancy called me to see if I would be able to create a jade sculpture for the garden she was redesigning for a family who recently emigrated to Vancouver. I assured her I was, so she made an appointment to bring the patriarch of the family to my gallery to meet me and to see my work.

Her client does not yet speak a word of English, so Nancy had to translate, but he was duly impressed with what he saw. He said he is really drawn to pure abstract form, and he kept running his hands over “Lift.” After the gallery visit, we had made plans to go to my jade supplier to see about a boulder of jade for the garden project. Before departing the gallery, the client informed us that he would like to purchase “Lift.”

Our journey to seek a jade boulder netted no result, but the supplier is bringing a shipment of new jade from this summer’s harvest, and there will be a sale in mid October, 2013. Nancy, her client and I will be there to see if there is a possible piece of jade for the garden project. Here’s hoping for a positive result!

The sculpture is beautiful. I can feel when my client’s hand was running over the smooth flow of the surface, his heart was touched at the same time.

The Chinese name for “Lift” is leaning towards “Taking Off”. In Chinese is 启航 (”chee-hung”, or “qi-hang” ).

Settling down in a new country is not easy. As designers, we try our best to help them to create a welcoming home. “Lift” is almost like a welcoming symbol to their new life in Canada.

Michael, thank you again for your beautiful art piece.
